This important holiday is about appreciating nature, taking action to help the environment, and honoring our planet. Here are a dozen ideas for how families can celebrate:
- Create a piece of art out of used items that would otherwise become trash (search the internet for “recycling craft ideas”)
- Play nature photographer! Get outside and enjoy taking photos of nature. You could also make a photo album of the pictures. Go online to identify the species of birds, flowers, insects, or trees that you photograph
- Go for a walk, hike, or bike ride. Keep an eye out for the nature around you.
- Cozy up outside to read a book with a nature theme.
- Go on a picnic
- Help clean up litter somewhere
- Read or watch The Lorax by Dr. Seuss with younger kids and discuss it
- Camp out for a night in your yard or a park that allows camping.
- Plant a small garden in the ground or in flower pots
- Choose a new environmental action you will try to take every day like using fewer plastic bags or always turning the lights off when they are not needed.
- Participate in an Earth Day fair or event
- Have a celebratory meal or a special dessert. Try to use organic ingredients. Don’t forget to bring a reusable bag to shop for the ingredients.
